Back to the Roots Mushroom Garden

34

Look what I just got in the mail!  A Back to the Roots Grow your own Mushroom Garden! I’m so excited to try it out.  According to the folks at Back to the Roots, this  Easy-to-Grow Mushroom Garden, now lets anyone grow up to 1 1/2 lbs of gourmet oyster mushrooms in as little as 10 days…right out of the little brown box! Just set on a windowsill, mist twice a day, and watch them pop right out by day 7! The soil inside is composed entirely of recycled coffee grounds – a safe & sustainable soil for the mushrooms. What a great family/kids/school project (they love the 10 days part!), and also fab for those who just love fresh, sustainable, and locally grown food!  I’ll be posting pics on day 7 and thereafter so you can check out the mushrooms I grow.

And here’s the good part. I’ll be doing a giveaway of one of these lovely boxes.  Leave me a comment below telling me how you like to use mushrooms, or how you might use this cool project, and you’ll be entered into the drawing. I’ll announce the winner of the giveaway one week from today.  Get your spores on!

Wonderful! Oh, do I love mushrooms sauteed in butter ( sorry)! Olive oil isn’t half as delicious, but for those of you with allergy problems, it works almost as well. This is such a cool giveaway!

  2. Kimmie says:

I love to use fresh mushrooms in a Spinach Salad. The earthy flavors work so well together and it’s perfect for HOT southern summers!

  3. Suzanne says:

Ooo Way cool. I would love to get this for my husband. He loves to cook and this would make a great risotto. mmmmmm

  6. Ginger G says:

… my chocolate cherry tomato plant is thriving on my little balcony next to my basil plant. They are willing to share space with the ‘shrooms!

  7. Kathy says:

That is the neatest thing I’ve seen in a long time! I’d use the mushrooms with my homegrown basil in homemade GF pizza and or pasta. if they get a good size I’d grill them. Sautéed or tossed in a stir fry….or stuff them! Raw in a salad maybe…I think I might need two! 🙂

  8. Jennifer says:

Chicken Marsala! My favorite way to use mushrooms. And how much would my boys love to watch these mushrooms grow!?

  9. Kathy P says:

Love oyster mushrooms! Sauteed w/ onion and garlic and finished w/ a little rosemary and lemon juice!

And how much would my two boys love watching
    these mushrooms grow?! So neat!

  11. Carrie Olson says:

Yum….I would make a wheat free, egg free, heirloom tomato and mushroom pizza!

  12. Dea says:

As a young child my father would take us on mushroom hunts. We were normally looking for morels, but occasionally we would find other great gems. I would love to learn to grow my own gems.

  13. Mag says:

Love this! I’ve been wanting to make a mushroom soup for the longest! something my son might actually eat (he loves mushrooms but i don’t give it to him enough).

  14. I’ve gotten hooked on mushrooms since I read that they help us feel full sooner and therefore cut down on the overall calories we consume. So now I tuck them into everything I can–chili, stir fries, bean salad, etc. My biggest concern with mushrooms has been the environmental impact of growing them, since the industrial growing process can be very energy intensive and creates a lot of methane and pollution. This kit would be a perfect solution to my health vs morals quandary.

This sounds like so much fun! We love mushrooms for stir fry, salad, spaghetti sauce, meatless lasagna, veggie burgers, and pizza. This would also make a great homeschool project for my daughter, who is very interested in botany and hopes to work in a green house someday.

i’d use it to convince my household that mushrooms are delicious! can’t get many people around here to eat them, but maybe if they were growing on the windowsill they’d be more inclined to do it!

  17. I like mushrooms in just about anything that makes sense to add mushrooms.

This garden sounds very interesting. We started our first garden this year and we’ve been semi-successful with a few items. My daughter would love this particular project as she is so “science” minded. In fact, the cucumbers growing now are all her baby.

  18. Nanci Selk says:

That is very cool. I would love to teach my kids how mushrooms grow. They see some in the yard every so often but they are poisonous. My husband and I love to cook with mushrooms. Maybe if the kids grow them they might decide they like eating them.

    in salads, pizza, whatever

Hi Cybele– it’s your “Cybele-sister” here. 🙂 I have a daughter who has discovered the power of mushrooms. She likes to use them to ;season” just about everything– from soups to stews to meat dishes. I have a question for you: Is the kit re-usable, or one-time only? Re-usable things *always* go over better in my house (we don’t do disposable-much-of-anything). That little kit might give us enough for a taster for one meal, though (remember, we’re feeding 11 over here). But it would be one awesome home-school science project!

  21. Pat says:

Nothing better than eating a fresh mushroom!

  22. Ruthie Frey says:

What a neat idea! We love mushrooms, but don’t always buy them coz of expense.. Would love to grow my own. Ummm. fried in butter, add to anything. Scambled eggs with onions, peppers, and mushrooms!

  23. Louise says:

I would give the kit to my daughter, Rachel. She is in graduate school in Boston and has become a true “foodie” partly driven by her food allergies. She even makes her own almond milk now!!! She and a roommate are in a community shares program for their veggies. I think she would love this and enjoy the process. A little bit of fun for her at the end of a long day in the lab!!

  24. Stephanie says:

I’d use them on pizza or salads. My husband doesn’t like them, but I’m convinced if I found the right recipe I could get him to eat them. 🙂

  26. Wow, we have a lot of mushroom lovers on here!

  27. Lili says:

I always wanted to give growing mushrooms a try!! How fun!!!

I would dry some of them and the rest I’d roast in duck fat and turn them into a creamy soup with some fresh parsley!
    Thanks for offering!

  28. I love mushrooms in every way! On pizza, in salads, in stir fries, in soups, in sauces… Man, I’d love to win this one!

  29. Amber says:

My family loves mushrooms! I love sliced poleta topped with sauteed mushrooms. I think my boys would enjoy growing their own!

  30. Meghan says:

Sounds interesting but I love mushrooms.

  31. shelly says:

I’d love to have a windowsill full of mushrooms to make mushroom soup. The Mushroom Garden would also help my Cub Scout check off an elective called “Grow It”.

  32. Hi Renee H (aka, Cybele)! It can be used two times. First you use one side, then you flip it and use the other. At which point, you’re out of spores. But that’s pretty good, to get two batches, I think. And my son Monte (7) is totally loving doing this. He’s in charge of misting the garden twice a day and monitoring its progress.

    all best,

    Cybele

  33. Cassie says:

Wow, I’ve never thought of growing mushrooms before. How are the mushrooms growing so far?

  34. Jen J says:

We love oyster mushrooms simply sauteed with other veggies, or in a traditional Chinese “hot pot” (like Chinese fondue in a meat/veggie broth)

My daughters and I would love to grow mushrooms as an extension of our first annual garden project this year. Oyster mushrooms are one of the only mushrooms my daughters like to eat, so all the better 🙂
