Allergy Friendly Friday
Our team in the Kitchen at the GF/AF EXPO Dallas: Chef Castano Penn, Chef Denise O’Dean SanFilippo, and Chef David Shaw
Last Friday, I traveled to Dallas for the Gluten and Allergen-Free Expo and Vendor Fair, which was a smashing success, with over 2000 visitors passing through the vendor fair, and all the cooking classes extremely well attended. I spent a good 10 hours baking and cooking in the kitchen you see pictured above, and quite literally never left the hotel once all weekend! I walked through the doors at 4:00pm on Friday, and walked out at 1:00pm Sunday, got back in my rental car, and drove back to the airport. It was a great weekend, but a crying shame I never got to see a glimpse of the city, particularly since both my maternal grandparents were from Texas, albeit, Amarillo, which they always described as “dust-bowl”. (more…)
Fall is back in full swing and I have a whole series of events lined up where I’ll either be doing book signings, cooking presentations, or speaking on panels about specialty diets and specialty diet blogging. To keep you readers in the loop, here’s where you can come see me in the next few months:
On September 21st, I’ll be joining a Frigidaire Kids’ Cooking Academy Save the Children event with Jennifer Garner and award-winning chef Suzanne Goin who are hosting an intimate round table discussion focused on all things holiday including recipes, traditions and managing chaos. They’ll even touch on how to cook enough turkey for all those guests (hint – the new Frigidaire Double Oven Range!). Online, people can check out Jennifer’s tips on holiday entertaining and all the ideas from the round table at Frigidaire.com. For the first 500 visits, Frigidaire will donate a turkey to a Save the Children family, and for every visit, $1 will go to Save the Children to support their US programs. Plus, visitors are entered for a chance to win a Range with Symmetry Double Ovens from Frigidaire, the new freestanding range that can roast two full-sized turkeys at once. I’ll post more info in the next few days, and will be following up with a detailed blog about the event, and an interview with Jennifer Garner.
First, the updates. Last weekend, I taught an allergy-free baking class at the FAAN conference in Baltimore, and was thrilled to see a packed house, and so many enthusiastic new allergen-free cooks. The Q & A was fantastic, and I had a blast demoing the alchemy of baking without gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, tree nuts and peanuts.
For those of you in the Chicago area, I encourage you to come take my class “Comfort Foods to Warm Your Soul” where I’ll teach you how to make an allergen-free cream sauce, homemade Mac n’ Cheese, and Red Velvet Cake, all top 8-Free and Gluten-Free. My class is on Saturday, April 30th, from 3-4, at the Gluten & Allergen-Free Expo. I will also be signing copies of my Allergen-Free Baker’s Handbook both Saturday and Sunday at the Vendor Fair, for the slamming price of only $15! This is $10 dollars LESS than in stores, and even cheaper than Amazon, because you don’t have to pay shipping.
