The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook gets starred review on Library Journal 5 years after publication!

Five years ago, I published my first cookbook, The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook.  I am happy to report that Library Journal has just given it a brand spanking new starred review, and listed it as one of the three essential allergy cookbooks to keep in your collection!

I am thrilled by this news, as it speaks to the enduring helpfulness of this title.  And it should serve as an inspiration to all you out there who’ve ever been told, “no”.  This book was rejected by every major publisher. I was told repeatedly that there was no need for a comprehensive allergy cookbook. But I knew differently, so I persevered, and finally found a tiny health publisher who believed in the necessity of such a cookbook.  Lo-and-behold, this little “useless” book went on to become a bestseller, is in its 4th printing, has a new revised addition, and is being called “Essential” by one of the most important trades in publishing.  Thank you to all who have bought this book, used this book, and recommended this book to others. I am so extremely grateful to Vital Health Publishing who originally published the book in 2005, and to Square One Publishers, who bought the book from Vital Health and have now published the revised copy.

In celebration of this new review of my old book, I will be giving away copies of  The Allergen-Free Baker’s Handbook and The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook.  Just leave a comment about the recipe or dish you would most like converted to “Allergen-free”. I’ll choose the two winners through at the end of this week.

    I have an Asian chicken salad recipe that I’d like to convert — it uses a little bit of soy sauce that I have to figure out how to duplicate “soy free”. And I wish I had an allergen free crunchy substitute for chow mein noodles for it.

    French toast – we just recently added wheat to our elimination list so bread is the biggest hurdle right now…either making bread from scratch OR buying a bread from the store (any recommendations?)

    Congratulations Cybele! I already have both books and I am thrilled with both!!! Your Vanilla Cupcakes and Maple Apple Crumble have been a hit with my teenage daughter’s non-allergic friends these past 2 days (our house seems to be the “go to” place this weekend. The Maple Apple Crumble has been gobbled up with barely a crumb left! Comment from my daughter’s non-allergic friend, “That was DELICIOUS!”…My reply, “Thank you, it is a Cybele Pascal recipe!” :)… I didn’t even mention that it was allergen free… 😉 Many thanks for all of the wonderful recipes!

    Love the first book, borrowed it from the library when looking for allergy free books before running out and buying just any. Haven’t found a recipe that my 8 yr old hasn’t liked yet (egg whites and milk are his enemies). He does seem to favor some of my favorites like donuts that I converted over from my great grandmother’s recipe and french toast, but one that I haven’t been successful with trying tofu in was cheesecake.

Just last week I recommended the intro and foreword of this book to a mom blogger (Dagmar Bleasdale) to help her figure out her child’s symptoms that the docs can’t seem to help with. They sounded very familiar! Looking forward to reading the new book and trying out some recipes.

    i’m not even sure what these are actually called… my grandmother called them “french pancakes” but i think they’re called creapes? i haven’t had those since i was really little but they were my favorite food =]

    Congrats Cybele,

    I bought your first book on Amazon right after publication…there were no reviews when I got it! I am so happy that the book has earned the praise and attention it deserves. It has been my ‘go to cookbook’ for 5 years. I would like to see Mac n cheese converted. I try with Quinoa macaroni, but it lacks the salty ‘cheese’ taste or sauce. I would love to see what you come up with!

    Congratulations and what a well deserved review! I’ve had “The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook” for a few years now (my son is allergic to wheat, dairy, egg, soy, peanuts, tree nuts and my daughter is allergic to dairy, eggs, peanut, tree nut, sesame, sunflower seeds, garlic, pork, and strawberries) and we love it! I don’t think I’ve ever made a recipe from it that all the (non-food allergic) adults in our household don’t love. My son is super picky but he loves all the breakfast foods (pancakes, muffins, quick breads) and the desserts. I just today saw where your new baking book is out and I am beyond thrilled! Thank you for making my life so much easier.

    I have the original printing of the book. What is in the revised addition/edition? Is the book on amazon the revised edition?

      Hi Laura:

      The revised edition omits spelt. When I published the first edition, spelt had not yet been declared wheat. additionally, i’ve improved upon some of the recipes, and made little changes throughout. Also an updated resources section. Yes, the book on amazon is the new revised edition.


  19. I am bare impressed with the article I have just read. I wish the author of can continue to provide so much productive information and unforgettable experience to readers. There is not much to tell except the following universal truth: When you go to a restaurant and trawl the menu you always end up wanting the meal that the waiter places in front of your date…. I will be back.
