Allergy Friendly Friday

 (Happy New Year!)

I can’t believe we’re at the end of another year!  How time flies.  My kids want to go watch the ball drop in Times Square tomorrow night. I don’t think so. I much prefer watching all those throngs of people on TV.  However, I do believe Justin Bieber is going to be performing, so maybe I’ll suck it up and do the kids a really big favor. But wait, Lady Gaga is performing too, which means quadruple throngs of people, which means I’m back to plan A, making cookies, and watching it on TV.  What will you be doing tomorrow night?   And do you have any special New Years allergy-friendly food traditions? My mom always made a roast, when I was growing up, but I really only liked the Yorkshire pudding part of that meal.  One of these days, we’ll have to devise an allergy-friendly Yorkshire pudding. Allergy Friendly Friday

(TGIAFF)

My Mother-in-Law died this week, after a 14 year battle against breast cancer. She was the strongest woman I have ever known, and one of most wonderful. She loved Fridays, and would be the first to say, “Thank God it’s Friday!” and pour out a round of vodka cranberries.  She also loved wine, and worked for many years as a wine importer, until the chemo killed her taste for it.  As I mentioned on my facebook page, my Mother-in-Law, Wendy also had a passion for time-saver gadgets, and was always showering me with them as gifts. She watched QVC for relaxation, and was the first one onto the Vidalia Chop Wizard craze, any kind of slice it and dice it tool, and don’t even get me started on the Snuggies!   So, as mentioned, I’m dedicating my next cookbook, “Allergy-Free and Easy Cooking” to my darling Mother-in-Law, Wendy, because without her and her time-saver gadgets, it never would have been possible.

This week, if you have quick and easy recipes, please link to them. Or, feel free to start posting for the next round of holidays. Doesn’t it seem that there’s a new one round every corner?  And speaking of, thank you for the lovely Thanksgiving themed recipe links!   Some fabulous highlights from the past two weeks are:

Please add your links to Allergy-Friendly Friday. PLEASE remember you have to link back from your post, for me to feature your recipe. That means link WITH A HYPERLINK THAT LINKS BACK HERE. Am I repeating myself? :) And remember, I specialize in creating gluten-free recipes that are free of the top 8 food allergens, but yours don’t have to be. They just have to be allergy-friendly in SOME way.

Thank you again to whomever it was that nominated this site to the Circle of Moms Top 25 Food Allergy Blogs list. I’d be honored to be in that top 25, so click on the badge above, and just scroll down till you hit my listing and click on vote, if you feel so inclined. Alternately, you can just click here. You can vote for it every day up until November 16th. And as mentioned earlier, with 25 slots to fill, there is room on that list for this blog and most of my food allergy blogger friends (girls, you know who you are!)

What an impressive lot of recipes you all have added over the last 2 weeks!  I’m going to have a very hard time just picking 4 featured recipes with so many beauties! Drumroll please….

My first pick for Allergy-Friendly Friday is this gorgeous Lemon Cake from Sheena Cucina. Lemon cake is one of my favorite things in the whole wide world.

Next I was wowed by these adorable seasonal Pumpkin Krispie Treats from Fresh4Five. These would be great on your Thanksgiving table as part of the dessert spread, don’t you think? Kids would love an alternative to pumpkin pie!

Then I noticed this innovative and warming Creamy Pumpkin Breakfast Cereal from Tessa the Domestic Diva.

And last, but certainly not least, I was drawn to these mega Gluten Free Blueberry Muffins from Gluten Freely Frugal.

These were just four of the many many wonderful allergy-free and gluten-free recipes you submitted over the past two weeks. Please come back with your links for this week! PLEASE remember you have to link back from your post, for me to feature your recipe. That means link WITH A HYPERLINK THAT LINKS BACK HERE. Check out this squash growing on the fence at my kids’ school!  Our edible schoolyard is really coming into fruition.  I love our “From the Ground Up!” program, and every year, I volunteer as the Garden Room Parent for both my kids’ classes.  It’s so exciting to see the kids weeding the beds, and digging in the dirt. Next month we’re putting in a worm farm. That should really get them enthused, don’t you think? (more…)

I’m a little surprised that not one single one of you had a thing to say about my Pumpkin Sunbutter Soup. Don’t be shy. Did you love it or hate it?  Yay, or Boo? I’ll be just as happy if you tell me you hate the concept as if you tell me it’s delish!  Alright, don’t tell me what you think of my soup, but at least tell me what you’re doing with pumpkin and all the other winter squash this season. I really do want to know! (more…)

Our team in the Kitchen at the GF/AF EXPO Dallas: Chef Castano Penn, Chef Denise O’Dean SanFilippo, and Chef David Shaw

Last Friday, I traveled to Dallas for the Gluten and Allergen-Free Expo and Vendor Fair, which was a smashing success, with over 2000 visitors passing through the vendor fair, and all the cooking classes extremely well attended. I spent a good 10 hours baking and cooking in the kitchen you see pictured above, and quite literally never left the hotel once all weekend!  I walked through the doors at 4:00pm on Friday, and walked out at 1:00pm Sunday, got back in my rental car, and drove back to the airport. It was a great weekend, but a crying shame I never got to see a glimpse of the city, particularly since both my maternal grandparents were from Texas, albeit, Amarillo, which they always described as “dust-bowl”. Suzanne Goin (My Favorite Chef)

On Wednesday, I participated in a charity event with Frigidaire and Jennifer Garner for Save the Children, called “Talk Turkey”.  Suzanne Goin, chef/owner of not one, but TWO of my favorite restaurants in the whole world (A.O.C. and Lucques) did a Thanksgiving Cooking demo for us. Here she is holding a slice of her Pumpkin Streusel Cake.  It’s sort of a pie-like cake, so she called it a “P’Cake”.  She was as lovely as her food is. Here’s a closeup of the P’Cake with crème fraîche and maple ice cream, drizzled with maple syrup.

I’m excited to have a lot of fun events coming up. Please see here for the fall schedule, and please come join me at any or all of them.  I’m also about to embark on a familiar journey: Single Parenting. My husband leaves Los Angeles next week for SIX MONTHS. He’s going to New York for work (he’s an actor), and I’m staying here, with my kids, so as not to pull them out of school and disrupt their life too much. I’ve been down this road before. After the birth of my second son, Monte, I single parented for 7 months. (that sucked with a toddler and a baby!) A couple of years ago, I was a single parent for over a year. There have been other stints, 3 months here, 3 months there… We always get through it, and I find myself falling into a whole new rhythm of family life.  But it’s not easy. I have so much respect for all the single parents out there.  Single parents, unite! (more…)
